Favorite Crochet Supplies

Here are some supplies you will want to have handy for making crocheted gifts.

Some of the patterns below require additional supplies, so be sure to read through the supplies list for your specific pattern before getting started.

Choosing Yarn for Gifts

Here are a few tips for choosing the best yarn to use for your crocheted gift.

Choose fiber content to suit the project.

Certain fibers are best for specific projects. For example, dishcloths and facecloths generally do best with durable, easy-to-wash cotton yarn. On the other hand, cuddly stuffed animals will probably turn out better when made with a jumbo fleece yarn.

In this list, you’ll find the ideal yarn weight and type of yarn for each pattern listed right here within the post for easy access. You can substitute these if you’d like – just be sure to take the yarn weight and fiber content into account.

Choose the best quality you can afford, so the gift lasts.

If you’re going to invest time into making a thoughtful gift, it’s important to make sure it lasts! You’ll want to use durable, high-quality yarn, especially if the item will get a lot of use or be washed regularly. Again, take into account the suggested fiber type and yarn weight for your project (suggestions are included within this post).

Choose superwash or washable fiber and include care instructions.

Of course, if you’re making anything that might need to be washed, check to ensure that your yarn is indeed washable. Acrylic, cotton, or superwash wool would be a good choice. Additionally, it’s also a good idea to include care instructions for your gift.

Consider whether or not the recipient has allergies.

Keep in mind that some people are allergic to animal-based products, such as wool. For those with sensitivities, wool can cause rashes and breakouts. Alpaca wool, however, tends to cause fewer sensitivities than other types of wool since it doesn’t contain lanolin. Alpaca yarn could be a good alternative for some recipients.

If you want to be on the safe side, choose a non-wool yarn, such as acrylic, bamboo, cotton, or linen, just to name a few.
