Do your students love crafts? Anytime I mention that we are going to make a craft, my students get so excited to see what they get to make. They always have so much pride when they complete a craft and I knew this would be the perfect addition to teaching the alphabet. There is so much for students to gain from letter crafts. Now, I wonder why I wasn’t doing these crafts sooner!

Why Are Crafts Important in the Classroom?

There are so many skills that crafting in the classroom can help practice and build. Some teachers may view crafting as time-consuming or not the best use of time, but when you break down all of the benefits it may make you change your mind.

  • Builds fine motor skills
  • Uses problem solving to put the craft together
  • Build coordination
  • Builds visual-spatial processing
  • Practice following directions
  • Builds pride
  • Provides an engaging activity
  • Allows students to use their creativity
  • Helps master different learning skills
  • Lots of learning fun!

These alphabet letter crafts include all of these benefits and more! Students also get to practice phonics, letter identification, tracing, and handwriting.

When I started to add these crafts to my classroom, the connection students made with understanding words that begin with the letter they learned was amazing. Students would remember for weeks and months later the crafts that they made to go along with the uppercase and lowercase letters. I also noticed how they would be able to understand even more words that began with the letter because of the connection from the craft. That is how much of an impact these letter crafts have.

Alphabet Letter Crafts

You may be wondering exactly what are letter crafts. They are alphabet crafts where students get to take a letter and turn them it into a person, place, or thing that has the same beginning sound as the letter. The craft that students make almost disguises the letter. The letter becomes part of the craft.

For example, the letter “W” is for worm. The uppercase letter “W” is used for the body of the worm. Another example is the lowercase letter “h” being a horse. The “h” is used for the horse’s body.

As you can see the letter is kind of disguised, but when you really look closely you can see the letter in the craft!

You can display the craft by placing it onto a piece of colored paper. Then, you add the name of the craft and the letter. What is great about doing this is that the craft has a sturdy place to be and students get to practice tracing the letter.

You can add the letter craft to a bulletin display, have students take them home after completing the craft, or you can put all of the crafts together into a book. The books turn out to be such a great keepsake!
