Ch – chain

DC – double crochet

HDC – half double crochet

SC2tog – single crochet 2 stitches together

Notes:

To make these crochet Valentine’s Day ornaments, you will need to crochet the ornament base, Gnome or Ladybug applique, and sew the applique onto the base. Then embellish the ornaments with decorative buttons.

How to sew applique to the ornament.Make sure to block your applique first. Using a sewing needle and matching thread, stitch the applique around the perimeter, then make a couple of stitches in the middle of the applique to make it lay flat.

Buttons.I like to buy buttons on the Etsy website, some of my favorites can be foundHERE.

For the Gnome ornament, I used these tiny red heart buttons, tiny pink heart buttons, and larger red heart buttons.

For the Ladybug ornament, I used these ladybug buttons and red buttons.

Ornament Base

Yarn:

Knit Picks Dishie medium weight #4 cotton yarn.Colors: White (A), Fiesta Red (B)

Hook and other materials:

  • Crochet hook G/4 mm
  • Yarn needle

Instructions:

Note:Beginning Ch 3 counts as a Stitch.

With color A, make magic ring;

Round 1. Ch 3, 11 DC in ring, Sl St in top of Ch 3 at beginning of the Rnd to join. Total – 12 DC.

Round 2. Ch 3, DC in same St, 2 DC in each St around, Sl St in top of Ch 3 at beginning of the Rnd to join. Total – 24 DC.

Round 3. Ch 3, DC in same St, DC in next St, *2 DC in next St, DC in next St, repeat from * around, Sl St in top of Ch 3 at beginning of the Rnd to join. Total – 36 DC.

Round 4. Ch 3, DC in same St, DC in next 2 Sts, *2 DC in next St, DC in next 2 Sts, repeat from * around, Sl St in top of Ch 3 at beginning of the Rnd to join. Total – 48 DC.

Round 5. Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a St), 2 SC in same St, SC in next 11 Sts, *2 SC in next, SC in next 11 Sts, repeat from * around, Sl St in top of first SC to join. Total – 52Sts. Fasten off.

Round 6. Join color B to first St of previous Rnd, Ch 1, *skip 1, 5 DC in next St, skip 1, Sl St in next, repeat from * around, last Sl St make into same St where you joined. Total – 13 shells. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all ends except two in different colors to make a hanging loop. Block your ornament base as necessary.

Heart Gnome Applique

Crochet hook 6/1.8 mm

Red heart button

Tiny pink heart button

Yarn needle

Sewing needle

Matching sewing threads

Hot glue gun

Instructions:

The Gnome consists of a Cap, Beard, Body, and Nose that are crocheted separately and then sewn together.

Cap

With crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and color A, Ch 15;

Round 1. Working under 2 loops: 3 TR in 5th Ch from hook, DC in each of next 2 Chs, HDC in each of next 2, SC in next, 2 SC in each of next 2, SC in each of next3, Ch 2,

continue working on opposite side of Chain: Sl St in each of next 3, SC3tog, HDC in each of next 2, DC in each of next 2, 3 TR in last, Ch 4, Sl St in same last. Fasten off.

Beard

With crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and color B, make magic ring,

Round 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitchesinto the ring –3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring.

Round 2. Ch 3, SC in first St, 2 SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in each of next 3 Sts, SC inCh-1 space, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, SC in Ch-1 space, SC in each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC in each of next 2 Sts, SC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

Body

With crochet hook 1/2.75 mm and color C, make magic ring,

Rnd 1. Ch 3, make all of the next stitchesinto the ring –3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in ring.

Rnd 2. Ch 3, HDC in first St, 2 DC in each of next 3 Sts, DC in next St,

first arm -Ch 7, Sl St in 2nd Ch and in each of next 5,

DC in next St, DC inCh-1 space, Ch 1, DC in next St (Heart point), Ch 1, DC in Ch-1 space, DC in each of next 2 Sts,

second arm – Ch 7, Sl St in 2nd Ch and in each of next 5,

2 DC in each of next 3 Sts, HDC in next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center. Fasten off.

Right foot

Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm. Join Color D to 2nd St of Rnd 2 of the Body,

Ch 1, 2 HDC in same St, Ch 1, Sl St in same St. Fasten off.

Left Foot

Use crochet hook 1/2.75 mm. Join Color D to last St of Rnd 2 of the Body,

Ch 1, 2 HDC in same St, Ch 1, Sl St in same St. Fasten off.

Nose

With crochet hook 6/1.8 mm and cotton thread size 10 color E, make magic ring,

Round 1. Ch 2, 9 HDC in ring, join with Sl St to top of Ch 2. Fasten off.

Finishing

Using a sewing needle and matching thread, sew Body, Beard, Cap and Nose together. Block applique.

Sew on the red heart button on the Beard.

Using a glue gun, glue arms to the heart button.

Embellish the Cap with a small heart button.

Making the ornament

1.Using saved yarn ends, make a hanging loop.

2. With a sewing needle and matching sewing thread, sew applique on the ornament base.
