Hello, hello! I’m back with another tutorial for you! If you are a new crocheter and have wanted to try a simple pattern, the classic granny square is for you. I had a lot of positive feedback with my last tutorial “How to Crochet a Hexagon” and had requests to continue making other walk-throughs using the same written and photo method. I hope you enjoy this one as well. Let’s begin:

Please read the tutorial thoroughly before starting your granny square.
Notes:
– This is a tutorial for a classic granny square that changes colour each round. It includes written and photo instructions to help guide you along
– There are many different techniques when making a classic granny square. This tutorial is based on my own preferences and style
– This tutorial goes up to 3 rounds, but you can easily continue to grow the size of your square. Simply follow the pattern and add in the appropriate increases each round. This will make sense as you work through tutorial
– A “cluster” refers to the block of “3 dc” stitches that are together in your chain spaces
– This tutorial is written in US terms
Materials Needed:
– This tutorial uses Caron x Pantone yarn but please use whatever yarn you have on hand or prefer. For beginners, I would recommend a worsted weight yarn while learning.
– You will need 2-3 different colours, 1 for each round. For this tutorial, they will be referred to as “A”, “B” and “C”
– Please use an appropriately sized crochet hook that is complimentary to your yarn choice. I will be using my Furls Streamline Ebony 5mmhook.
– Yarn needle
– Scissors
Stitches:
SS – Slip Stitch
CH – Chain
DC – Double Crochet
Pattern (Multi Coloured Granny Square):
With yarn colour “A”, begin by making a magic circle OR CH 3 and SS into the second chain from your hook to form a circle.
Round 1:
CH 2 and place 1 DC into your circle. (You will complete this cluster later with your last dc of the round)
– CH 2 (this creates your first corner space)
– Make 3 DC stitches into your circle.
– CH 2 (this creates your second corner space)
– Make 3 DC stitches into your circle.
– CH 2 (This creates your third corner space)
– Make 3 DC stitches into your circle.
– CH 2 (This creates your fourth corner space)
Make 1 DC into your circle. SS into the top of your beginning CH 2 (This last DC will complete your first cluster). Fasten off and change your yarn colours.
Round 2:
Attach yarn colour “B” into any ch 2 corner space with a SS.
– In that corner space, CH 2 and then create 1 DC (You will complete this cluster later with your last DC of the round). Continue in that space by making CH 2 and 3 DC stitches.
– CH 1
– Into the second corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the third corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the fourth corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– CH 1
Make 1 DC into the very first chain space you started and SS into the top of your beginning CH 2. (This last DC will complete your first cluster). Fasten off and change yarn colours.
Round 3:
Attach your next yarn colour “C” with a SS into any CH 1 space.
– In that CH 1 space: CH 2 and then create 1 DC (You will complete this cluster later with your last DC of the round)
– CH 1
– Into the first corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the CH 1 space from the previous round (make 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the second corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– Ch 1
– Into the ch 1 space from the previous round (make 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the third corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the CH 1 space from the previous round (make 3 DC)
– CH 1
– Into the fourth corner space (make 3 DC, CH 2, 3 DC)
– CH 1
Make 1 DC into the next CH 1 space from the previous round and slip stitch into the top of your beginning CH 2 (This last DC will complete your first cluster). Fasten off and weave in all ends. Your 3 round granny square is complete!
A few things to remember:
– A cluster is the block of 3 double crochet stitches grouped together in the chain spaces.
– The chain 2 spaces will be your corners. They will always hold two sets of clusters.
– The chain 1 spaces on the edges are your increases. They will always hold 1 cluster.
– The chain 1 spaces will always be directly above 1 cluster.
