How to: Crochet Beanie Pattern: Prismatic Beanie - Winding Road Crochet (2024)

You will love the Prismatic Crochet Beanie Pattern. It combines a bright and colorful variegated yarn with a more neutral-colored yarn for a perfect balance of color. This beanie works up fast and uses one of my favorite stitches.

Below you will find the complete pattern and instructional photos for this Prismatic Crochet Beanie pattern. You will also find all the materials, stitches, gauge, and sizing information. A Crochet Beanie and Matching Scarf

Two years ago I designed the Rainbow and Rain Clouds Infinity Scarf. It was a fan favorite for quite a while. As fall approaches I thought it would be nice to make a matching crochet beanie pattern. These patterns use a variegated yarn and solid color yarn to create the perfect balance of color. The hat and scarf are colorful but not too busy.

Creating the Texture and Stripes

For this pattern, we will start with a simple ribbing for the hatband. Then we will begin to work along the sides of the hatband rows to create our hat body.

On the hat body, we will be working in joined rounds. We will also be working in all one direction. This is important because we will be working some of your Half Double Crochets in the Third Loop. I have a great video tutorial on this but it is also shown in the video tutorial for the Prismatic Crochet Beanie Pattern as well. This technique will give us beautiful texture. Once you learn how to do this, the beanie is super easy to make.

Yarn used for the Prismatic Beanie Pattern

You can use any size 4 yarn for this pattern. I chose to use Red Heart Super Saver in Soft White and Heather Grey for the solid color yarns in this beanie. For the color yarns, I used Super Saver Stripes and Super Saver Pooling yarns. I just love how they both turned out. Of course, you can opt for two solid color yarns and just have stripes. It is your choice.

The Premium Ad-Free PDF Pattern

Below you will find the free pattern with all the instructional photos and videos needed to complete the pattern, but I am also aware that several of us like to crochet on the couch, in the car, or in bed with a printout of the pattern. This is why I also offer a nicely formatted ad-free large font PDF version of the pattern. You can print the pattern and take it on the go with you or tuck it into your project bag or basket.

I moved all the photos to the end of the PDF so you can reference them as you needed them and print just the pattern without using up as much ink. The Premium PDF version of the pattern can be purchased on Etsy of Ravelry.

Special Stitches

Half Double Crochet into the third loop – Instead of working your half double crochet into the front or back loop of your stitch, you will rotate your project forward and work your stitch into the middle bar or loop on the backside of the stitch right below the back loop. Watch the video tutorial below for a demonstration. (Feel free to jump to the 4:00 mark)

Prismatic Crochet Beanie Pattern

Notes:
-Written in US terms.
– I do not count my CH1, turning chain, as a stitch.

Part 1: Beanie Brim

CH 8 (With Solid Color)

Brim Row 1: SC into the 2nd CH from the hook. SC into next 6 CH. (7)

Brim Row 2: CH1, turn, BLOSC into next 7 STs.

Repeat Row 2 until you have the correct number of rows for the size you are working.

Baby Size – Work row 2 until you have 45 rows total.
Toddler Size – Work row 2 until you have 53 rows total.
Child Size – Work row 2 until you have 60 rows total.
Tween Size – Work row 2 until you have 67 rows total.
Small Adult Size – Work row 2 until you have 70 rows total.
Large Adult Size – Work row 2 until you have 74 rows total.

Last Brim Row: Fold your project in half so that your first and last row are on top of each other. CH1, Make a SLST that goes through the next ST in both the first and last row, continuing making STSTs through the next 6 STs in both rows.

The last brim row will join your first and last row together with slip stitches. Do not fasten off. Just turn your brim so that the seam from the slip stitches is on the inside of the brim.

Part 2: Beanie Body

Notes:
-Your stitch count will be the same as the number of rows worked in the beanie brim.
– We will be working all in one direction.
– Quick Tip: If you are working into a solid color row you will be working into the third loop. If you are working into a multicolor row, you will be working a normal half double crochet.

We are still working with your solid color.

Body Row 1: CH2, HDC into the side of each of the Brim rows. SLST to first HDC.

Body Row 2: CH1, HDC into Third Loop of each ST around. SLST to first HDC.

Body Row 3: Change to Multicolor yarn: CH1, HDC into Third Loop of each ST around. SLST to first HDC.

Body Row 4: Change to Solid Color Yarn: HDC into each ST around. SLST to first HDC.

Body Row 5: Change to Multicolor yarn: CH1, HDC into Third Loop of each ST around. SLST to first HDC.

Body Row 6: Change to Solid Color Yarn: HDC into each ST around. SLST to first HDC.

Body Row 7: CH1, HDC into Third Loop of each ST around. SLST to first HDC.

Continue repeating rows 3-7 until you have the total number of rows in the body of the beanie that you need for your size hat.

Baby Size – Repeat rows 3-7 until you have a total of 16 rows in the body of the hat.
Toddler Size – Repeat rows 3-7 until you have a total of 19 rows in the body of the hat.
Child Size – Repeat rows 3-7 until you have a total of 21 rows in the body of the hat.
Tween Size – Repeat rows 3-7 until you have a total of 22 rows in the body of the hat.
Small Adult Size – Repeat rows 3-7 until you have a total of 24 rows in the body of the hat.
Large Adult Size – Repeat rows 3-7 until you have a total of 26 rows in the body of the hat.

After your last row, fasten off leaving a 20 inch tail end to use to gather up the top of the crochet beanie.

Finishing Your Crochet Beanie Pattern

You are more than welcome to run a gathering stitch around the top of the hat to gather it together. That method works great, but here is a fun new method that I like to use for gathering the top of a hat.

First, using a long strand of yarn you are going to create a star on the top of your hat. Just stitch through one of the last stitches of a row in each place that there would be a star point.

  • How to: Crochet Beanie Pattern: Prismatic Beanie - Winding Road Crochet (10)
  • How to: Crochet Beanie Pattern: Prismatic Beanie - Winding Road Crochet (11)

Now pull this yarn tight bringing those five points into the center. This will leave you with 5 folds on the outside of the hat.

Take your yarn once more and make the same star pattern hooking the center of these five folded areas.

  • How to: Crochet Beanie Pattern: Prismatic Beanie - Winding Road Crochet (12)

Pull this star tight and you will be left with a nice neat fold at the top of your hat. I think this method leaves the top of the hat looking neat enough that it does not need a pom-pom, but I lovePom poms, so sew one on top if you like.

Weave in any loose ends and your hat is complete and ready to be gifted or used.
