If you’re looking for a quick and easy free crochet pattern, this blanket is for you!
Melissa, AKA the brains behind the very clever Instagram page, @mels_homemadecraft shared the crochet blanket pattern in the Kmart Hacks and Decor Facebook group using Kmart’s chunky yarn – and people are loving it.
How to crochet a blanket: free pattern
Gather your supplies:
- 20 balls(approx) of Kmart’s chunky 12 ply yarn
- Size 7 hook
- 2 balls of Spotlight’s Spot Saver yarn in natural
Crochet stitches for this blanket
Stitch abbreviations (US terms)
- CH - Chain
- DC - Double Crochet
- SL ST - Slip Stitch SC - Single Crochet
- V ST - (dc, ch 1, dc) all in one stitch
- Ch3 Counts as a Double Crochet
- Picot - Chain 4 then work a SL St into the 1st chain of the chain 4 made creating a little loop.

NOTE: Melissa's pattern is written using US terminology. The step-bystep tutorials below are for UK terms.
- Single crochet (sc): single crochet in the US is the same as double crochet (dc) in the UK. Here's how to master double crochet UK.
- Double crochet (dc): double crochet in the US is the equivalent of treble crochet in the UK. Here's how to treble crochet UK.
- Chain (ch):the chain stitch is a simple stitch that creates a chain of loops. While the tension of your chain stitch can greatly impact the rest of your project, it’s still a pretty easy stitch to master. Here's how to chain stitch in crochet.
Free crochet v-stitch blanket pattern
The v-stitch blanket is perfect for beginners and can be made up using the double crochet stitch. (Here’s a video showing you how to make the v-stitch blanket.)
Chain 184
Row 1: dc in the 5th ch from the hook. *skip 2 ch, v stitch into the next ch space*. Repeat from * to * across the row until there's 3 ch left. skip 2 and dc in last ch.
Row 2: ch 4, dc in same stitch. *Skip the next dc and ch, v stitch into next dc*. Repeat from * to * across the row to the last v stitch, dc in last stitch.
Repeat until the blanket has reached your desired length.
Border pattern:
Melissa says she used 2 balls of Spotlight’s Spot Saver yarn in natural to create the border. Here's the pattern:
1st Row: Join other coloured yarn with a slip stitch to row 1 of your work (You will workon the opposite sides of the chains that you created at the beginning of your project). Chain2, Double crochet in the same space as the chain 2 and continue to double crochet all theway to the end. - 158dc
2nd Row: ch 1, 1 sc in same st,*sk next st, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next st, sk next st, 1 sc innext st, sk next st, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next st, sk next st, 1 sc in next st,* repeat between * *to last 4 st, sk next st, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next st, sk next st, 1 sc in last st. Turn.
3rd Row: ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in ch 1 sp, *(5 dc, picot, 5 dc) in next ch3 sp, 1 sc in next ch 1 sp,* repeat between ** to last ch 3 sp.
Fasten off, weave in the ends and continue to make tassels.
